1. Discussion of Plot
The movie North Country is about a young mother of two, Josie, who just left her abusive
husband, and returns to her home town. Josie meets her friend Glory who tells her to get a
job in the steel mine she, and Josie’s’ father work for. Josie gets the job with Glory’s’ help.
She befriends the other women who also work for the mine. During her time working at
the mine, Josie, and her other female co-workers are constantly sexually harassed by their
male co-workers. Josie goes to her supervisor with her concerns and he tells her that
women shouldn’t work there and that she should take it like a man. The harassment
continues and Josie decides to go directly to the owner of the mine to discuss her concerns,
but the owner doesn’t care and tells her that she can quit right away if she wants. After
being assaulted by her co-worker Bobby Sharp, Josie finally quits. She goes to Glory’s’
lawyer friend Bill White, and asks him to help her sue the mining company. He tells her
that the only way to win the case is to get the other women on her side so they can file a
class action lawsuit. The other women don’t want to risk losing their jobs or getting
harassed even worse at work, and decline to help Josie. Bill and Josie go through with the
lawsuit anyway hoping that the other women will stand up. In court, the mining lawyer
