My thoughts on Ruth Benedict’s article at first was that it was a little bit difficult to understand
but as I continued reading I started to get the just of it. Benedict’s ideas were in a sense debate able, I
did however discover multiple facts on this six-page article. This article was very fascinating I both agree
and disagree with Benedicts’ article some points she made were clever and others not so much, I did
enjoy the stories such as the headhunters and about homosexuality being a choice back in the older
days of France. I was not too sure what Benedict was getting at when she was explaining about a “chief”
rightfully being able to kill if his son has died I did believe that that was wrong and not moralistic. In all
honestly, I do believe just like Benedict that mankind does take any shape presented to them, I feel like
in a way everyone is at war with each other, from religion to small social groups everybody wants to be
right and never even consider the fact that everyone could also be wrong.
Violence does help for a moment and then fades rather quickly, however some people do not
know how to use words too well and only know how to talk with their fists whether they don’t have
proper education due to not being able to afford it or they are afraid of stumbling over their words
either way it is a hard topic to discuss. Benedict does discuss points of homosexuality and violence and
did paint a proper picture while also helping me understand what the author was getting at. Society is
talked about and is said to take shape of whatever is given, I do agree with that statement only because
from kids we are taught certain things, each of us different.
Overall, this article was a great read and I did learn new and interesting things and beliefs from
Benedict. I enjoyed the facts that were put into this article and the way Benedict things, my decision in
the end would be to agree with Benedict, I know I said there were some aspects that could be disagreed
with in the beginning of this paper but I like to think that the good has outweighed the bad and I do look
forward to possibly reading some more of Ruth Benedicts thoughts and articles.
