Verbal Communication
Verbal communication generally refers to the written or oral words we exchange and these words
are also referred to as language. However, verbal communication also includes pronunciation
(accent), word meaning, and regional variations (dialect) and other factors. Our verbal
communication plays a role in identity and relationship development. How we speak can
improve or impede our relationships and reveals information about ourselves to listeners
(beliefs/values/culture).
Since language is more than words it is important to understanding the functions of language so
that you can communicate more effectively. Language serves SEVEN functions which speakers
use to accomplish goals or tasks.
