Newborn Experience
I chose to sign up for this assignment on September 11, 2018. Once in the hospital I was
to report to the charge nurse prior to 0100. The charge nurse then reassigned me to a RN who I
was to shadow until 0600. During my shift, I observed my RN demonstrate a mother and
newborn assessment. Once I had gained the knowledge and confidence I started to personally
perform these assessments myself.
Newborn Assessment Clinical Tool
Our professors provided us with a clinical tool serving as a reference guide to refer to
when performing the newborn assessments independently. I arrived on the unit at 0100 and
began performing my infant head to toe assessment right away. I measured the newborn’s
temperature by placing the thermostat under the axially. The reading came out to 98.3 degrees
