NEURODIVERSITY – ILLNESS OR DIFFERENCE
My topic for the persuasive essay is Neurodiversity, it is attempted towards two things: 1. bringing awareness
about the difference between neurotypical and neurodiverse, better understanding of this being a learning
difference and not a disorder. 2. I wish to bring about a difference in our approach when we work with or
study with a student recognized as neurodiverse, with a more reformed, encouraging and corrected manner.
I will discuss the meaning of the word “neurodiverse” and its origin. Discuss how it is considered different from
neurotypical, the skillset that neurodiverse people possess, the perspective behind replacing negative words
like “illness, disorder” to define them. I will begin with a quote from Harvey Blume and then offer an analogy
and in the end before I offer my conclusion I will give an example of a famous entrepreneur, who has
numerous times openly spoken about how he dealt with his dyslexia and how he made it his strength.
Harvey Blume said, “Neurodiversity may be every bit as crucial for the human race as biodiversity is for life
in general. Who can say what form of wiring will prove best at any given moment?” That would not be fair to
call a calla lily as “petal deficit disorder” or to diagnose a person from Sahara Desert as “cold deprivation
syndrome.” There is no normal flower or culture. Similarly, we have to accept that there is no normal mind.
ANALOGY:
How do you feel when you see the dog on police car vs when you see the dog with floppy ears?
