Leon Frédéric’s “Nature or Abundance” depicts a mythological image of fertility and
abundance represented in the form of a nurturing mother and her children, who are made
to represent the four seasons. Frdric successfully portrays an image of plentiful bounty and
the beauty of nature through his utilization of vibrant color, textural depth, and organic
form.
The subject matter of the piece included a mother-like goddess flanked by four children,
with three children at her feet and one suckling her breast. The woman and the children are
adorned from head to toe with an excess of flowers, wheat, and fruit. All the flowers are
extremely detailed realistic, as shown by the shadowing and three-dimensional-like texture
of the oil paint. This depth is also reflected in the composition of the woman and children,
with three children situated in the foreground and the woman and another child in the
background. Their positioning appears to be balanced, as none of them are directly next to
or beside one another. Behind the lady and children is a cloudy sky; however, both night
and day are depicted. To the left of the woman is daylight, as assured by the sun above her
shoulder. To the right is the night sky. The clouds in the sky are swirled in a seemingly
random manner. This emphasizes the clouds’ organic form. The most noticeable quality of
the painting is its color. From afar, the vividness of the piece drew my attention and the
detail of the multitude of flowers of assorted colors is even brighter up close. The color
palette is particularly varied, as there are multiple hues of every color from bright yellows
to pinks and greens. The vividness of the painting is also enhanced by the high saturation
and contrast. Upon sight, the brightness of the flowers causes the children to be more
subdued. The overall tone of the piece, apart from the sky, is warm and bright. Because the
sky is primarily blue and white, it has a cooler tone. Paired with the vivid colors is the
thick texture, which helps make the natural elements in the painting seem even more
realistic. The texture, from its appearance up close, looks sticky and somewhat bumpy,
which contributes to the overall depth. I noticed an apparent contrast in space, as the area
in which the woman and children are is flooded with colorful flowers and plants, leaving
