1a. How much orange juice concentrate can be processed in one 8-hour workday?
To start the problem off you need to look at the time for Juice Extraction and Juice
Filtration. The time, not including the set up time is 1.5 hours for Juice Filtration. The
bottleneck of Juice concentration is 18,000 lbs./hour. You want to take the amount in Juice
Concentration an hour (18,000) and multiple that by the amount of time it takes to process
the Juice filtration (1.5), which then equals 27,000 lbs. of juice in concentration for 90
minutes. (Juice Filtration can produce 30,000 lbs. of juice in 90 minutes.) Since the
process takes two hours to complete you want to divide that amount by two and you get
13,500lbs/hour. There are 8 working hours in a day so times that by 8 and you get the
answer of 108,000 lbs. of juice concentrate produced. (See Appendix 1)
1b. Assume extraction had previously been setup for the size oranges being processed.
How much idle time will there be in the extraction operation during one 8-hour workday?
The Filtration process can run 4 times a day. (8 hours a day/2 hours a cycle) There is a
bottleneck of only 18,000/lbs. an hour at Juice concentration, therefore there may be some
juice that needs to be stored from juice filtration to concentration or only 18,000/lbs. can
be taken out of the 80,000 lbs. of juice at a time. Since the set up for extraction has already
been done we only need to account for the time in filtration, which is 30 minutes of idle
time. Therefore 4 times the amount of idle, which is 30, equals 2 hours. The machines will
be in idle for 2 hours a day in an 8-hour shift from the Extraction to Filtration steps. (See
Appendix 2)
2a. If you could add storage capacity somewhere between steps two and four in this
production line in order to increase daily output, where would you place it? How much
storage would you add?
Currently there is bottleneck in between Filtration to Concentration. Concentration can
only produce 18,000lbs/hour whereas the first two steps Extraction and Filtration can
process 20,000lbs/hour. If you go back to the answer in question one you will know that
Filtration can produce 30,000lbs in its 1.5-hour process. Concentration can only process
27,000lbs in an hour and a half therefore you will need a 3,000lb storage capacity. Since
