1. Explain the two main areas of naturally rewarding activities in which these activities
make individuals feel more competent and feel self-controlling. What does each of these
aspects add to the discussion on naturally rewarding activities that the other does not
provide? Are there any underlying foundations that are counter to each other? These
activities allow such feelings as competence and self-control. The feeling of competence
usually comes from positive feedback, if you continuously perform well, it may counter this
feeling. Self-control is the drive to take charge of one’s feelings and surrounding world.
Being over managed or even micromanaged can counter this.
2. While much focus has been paid to feelings of competence and self-control, the other
area of naturally rewarding activities involves feelings of purpose. Why do feelings of
purpose matter so much in the natural rewards dimension of self-leadership? What are
the benefits that arise when work has a purpose? These activities provide a sense of
purpose. Sometimes we struggle with school or work when it makes us feel a certain way,
because without the feeling of natural reward it becomes hard to see the worth. Feelings of
purpose matter in the natural reward dimension of self-leadership because this allows us to
make the work feel more enjoyable. When work has purpose or doesn’t feel like actual work,
we are more ready and willing to do it as individuals.
3. How can individuals build more natural rewards into life’s activities? What does that
