In the Eye of the Beholder
They say beauty if in the eye of the beholder, so what is beauty to you? Beauty can mean
many things to different people. The great thing about beauty is that it does not have to be
confined to one group or meaning. Many traits and features are found to be beautiful by
many different people. Music can be beautiful; nature and words can be beautiful as well.
Beauty can have many perceptions; it is a term that can never quite be defined.
The word “beauty” is a Middle English word that has several sources to its etymology. In
its oldest form, the Latin word “bellus” means “beautiful, fine”. Most words that we use
today come from the Latin language so this is no surprise that the word beauty started with
this language. Then in the 14th century Anglo-French language had a word to describe
beauty. The word was “beute”. It meant “physical attractiveness” and “goodness,
courtesy”. I prefer the Anglo-French etymology because it encompasses more of what I
feel beauty is. To me beauty is not just the physicality of someone. Beauty can mean
natural, great, exotic, inner and many other concepts. Some of the most beautiful things in
the world are not even human. If people took

more time out of their lives to just look around, they would realize that they are surrounded
by beauty that is greater than anything they could create or imagine.
