Individual Assignment #1
Introduction
A hospital is a healthcare institution providing patient care with specialized medical and
nursing staff, as well as equipment. There are a number of ownership forms when it comes to
hospitals within the United States. Not-for-profit are the most common type of hospitals in the
United States but there are also for-profit and government based hospitals. Not-for-profit
hospitals are mainly funded by charity, educational funds and or religion. Hospitals that switch
over to not-for-profit shows no loss in quality care but improvement in financial health. Over the
past 200 years hospitals have made the switch from profit to not-for-profit hospitals. People who
are against not-for-profit organizations/hospitals have argued that staying for profit helps the
hospitals bring in needed resources and experienced management. However, a not-for-profit
doesn’t pay taxes and benefits the community in the end.
