Mystic Monk Coffee Case study
The Carmelites are a religious order of the Catholic Church that was formed by men who
traveled to the Holy Land as pilgrims and crusaders and had chosen to remain near Jerusalem to
seek God. The Wyoming Carmelite monastery, was found by Father Daniel Mary, who lived in
Carmelite hermit in Minnesota before moving to Wyoming. Father Daniel Mary, the prior of the
Carmelite Order of Monks in Clark, Wyoming had a vision to expand his current brotherhood of
13 monks living in a small home into a 500 acre monetary called a new Mount Carmel that
would include living and working areas for 30 monks, a gothic church, a convent for Carmelite
nuns retreat center for visitors and a hermitage. Father Prior had identified a nearby ranch that
was perfect for his vision, the property was currently being listed for $8.9 million and this
created a financial obstacle. The monastery currently received $250,000 in donations and they
had earned $75,000 in the first year of its Mystic Monk Coffee operations. The coffee roaster
they currently were using had reached its capacity of producing packaged coffee and so they
would have to buy a larger roaster and that cost about $35,000. The coffee currently was selling
