My Experience of Being a Group Leader
Being a group leader is not new to me. I’ve been a group leader since I was a kid. I can‘t
even remember it how old I was at that time. I’ve been a group leader in school, circle of friends
and with my cousins, even if they are older than me. This is because I think I have a matured mind
than them. Being a group leader with my experience takes a lot of guts and bravery. Guts because
you should have that self confident that is built with in yourself in order for your members to be
confident as well. You should be brave because you’re the one who take full responsibility of your
members. Being a group leader is so risky that takes a lot of courage. I think the characteristic that
a good group leader should possess is someone who could provide direction, instruction and
guidance to the members for the purpose of achieving a certain goal.
I’ve been a group leader in school many times and I can’t even count how many times it
was. Whether it is classroom related or school organization staffs. Classroom related like group
works, projects or performance. When I was a leader in a specific performance at our school
before, it was really hard. You need to be patient because some members don’t care about it but
for you, it means a lot. Like the member that I had before, I asked and teach her to do these staffs
for our final performance in Filipino which is role play but she didn’t take is seriously. When I
scheduled date for practices, she even won’t come like it was really pissing me off but I still
manage to control myself in order for us to present our final performance. Leader should be patient
and knows how to adjust situations. I’ve been in four different schools already and I think in my
circle of friends each school, I am the group leader except in my new circle of friends in Science
High School. When I was in elementary, I think my friends won’t go after me because they respect
me for I am they leader. When I was in junior high, my circle of friends follows my steps like, if
there is a free time and where ever I go, they go follow me. Like they can’t decide for themselves. I
usually do the decision making for the group like planning what are we gonna do, what time we’re
gonna do it, and where are we gonna meet. Staffs like that. When we will meet or have reunion
with my cousins, I’m the one who usually does the decision making of the group. Like the time
when it was all souls day. We went to the cemetery of my grandfather to visit him, eat and pray.
After eating and praying, I notice that things are getting boring that is why I introduce to them a
game that would make us enjoy. I am the one who lead the game and it was really fun.
Leadership I think is not innate to me but I think I can be a good leader by developing my
abilities and strengths. I think I don’t have that talent to be a good leader but I can work hard to
achieve it. I have this feeling to achieve it because I do believe hard work beats talent.
