Illustrating the Different Types of Power: Comparing Characters to Power in “Remember the
Titans”
Theoretical Background of Power
Power has different meanings in society. It has the ability to produce effects on people in
a positive or negative way. The influence of power can be shown in 5 different types of power.
The personal types of power are expert and referent whereas the position types of power are
legitimate, reward, and coercive power. Through the movie “Remember the Titans”, power is
noticed through some of the main characters who are forced to coerce and attend an integrated
high school. As the characters play different roles in leadership, they also develop through the
influence of power in a positive outcome.
