Different Class, Different Respect
In the world, there will always be a lower class and a higher class. In the television show
Downtown Abbey Season 1 Episode 1, distinguishing between the two social classes is
very easy. In the high, very elite social class there are people like Lady Mary Crawley, who
is the oldest of the Grantham daughters. Then there is Cora, Countess of Grantham. In the
lower class there are people like Thomas who is the First Footman or John Bates, Lord
Grantham’s Valet. In Downtown Abbey, Mary, Cora, Thomas and Bates each represent
their social class through their actions.
Lady Mary is high class and acts spoiled. She is the center of attention of the family,
anything that she wants or doesn’t have, she gets. Her parent’s main concern is that she
gets the money that is rightfully hers, and when she weds, the husband is to be a very
wealthy man who will give her everything that she deserves. In the show Downtown
Abbey, when she finds out the tragedy of the Titanic Ship, her main concern is “Does this
mean I have to go in full mourning? No, I mean about the other thing. No one knew
outside our family.” The way Mary is acting, it shows how she didn’t really care for her
fiancée. She just wanted a wealthy future ahead of her and to know that she will always be
in the wealthy high class. Mary didn’t care for the fact that her fiancée had just passed, her
