The Thought Piece
Summary
“The Monkey’s Paw” written by W.W Jacobs is set in the White family home. The story
begins on a dark and stormy night with the White family enjoying the warm fire. Sergeant-Major
Morris arrives to tell the family of his adventures after spending the last twenty-one years
stationed in India. His greatest story is about the monkey’s paw, which has the ability to grant
thee wishes to the person who possess it. Morris explains that the paw is cursed; those who wish
from it get hurt. Despite the Sergeant’s warning, Mr. White buys the paw and makes a wish.
While waiting for his first wish to come true, he ascertains the consequence of his selfishness.
Mr. White uses the third wish to reverse the second. In the middle of the night there is a
knocking at the door. Mr. White is concerned as to what it might. Before Mrs. White can open
