Billy Beane and his team were able to utilize the different numbers to literally make the
players a moving statistic. Every bat they make, every run they do, every location that they
hit the is counted in and measured to see what they are valued at in terms of the Major
League teams. The major metric that was accounted for in the decision making was the
total budget for the team. This was because the budget was their main constraint in making
a team or in that situation, switching and filling in positions. This in turn helped shape
what they could or couldn’t get.
Pete made the variable in the movie of players that are undervalued (less than or equal to
what their initial worth was). One player named Bradford was considered to be the most
undervalued player in Major League Baseball because of the way he threw the ball. It’s
like a major company introducing a product that doesn’t seem that it will perform at all by
the way it looks or the way it may stand out from the rest of the products in the market.
However it can prove to be the best decision they make because of the fact that they are
looking at the numbers and see that this product will indeed bring great profits as it is
something that people may not know that they want.
