Summary of LDA White Paper and Opposing Arguments
Should students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) receive similar Response to Intervention
(RTI) services to meet their academic deficits as students with low academic achievement scores?
Should the failure to respond to RTI automatically qualify a student for SLD services or should there be a
more stringent, empirical process to qualify these students? These are a few among many major
arguments made in the White Paper Evaluation conducted by the Learning Disabilities Association of
America (LDA). Three major points that The White Paper and the Response to LDA White Paper
addressed are the evaluations criteria to determine SLD, if RTI intervention was sufficient to meet the
needs of SLD, and SLD determination factors.
