INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
Welcome to the module, Information and knowledge management (PBA4808). This
document provides you with important information about this course. Please familiarise
yourself with the main learning outcomes for the module and ensure that you have this
document with you when attending study schools. You are invited to consult with us when
faced with challenges so that we may guide you.
PURPOSE, BROAD AND SPECIFIC OUTCOMES FOR THE MODULE
Purpose
This module deals with current information system issues and provides intellectual insights
and competencies that inform the key decisions of management. Because lectures have an
interactive format, pre-reading of the prescribed material is essential. You are expected to be
individuals with business or management backgrounds who wish to gain a broader and deeper
understanding of functional information system and how this supports the firm’s strategic
intent.
The module is designed to provide insight into key managerial issues in firms that use
information technology, as well as the knowledge to gain and sustain a competitive advantage.
The module focuses on the manipulation of data to derive information via processes and
technologies that form the basis of information systems in the new economy. The
management of knowledge and the development of knowledge strategies have become
priorities for firms as they have realised how the application of knowledge can be key in adding
value and differentiating products and services. The purpose of this module is to investigate
the business value of knowledge and to describe how knowledge is created and managed in
the firm. For most students, the idea of business being dependent on knowledge will be new.
A good command of the English language is essential for this module.
Broad and specific outcomes
The broader purposes of this module are to
introduce you to data, information and knowledge as a hierarchical system
help you gain insight into the management of information and knowledge systems
explain and evaluate information technology strategy
introduce you to knowledge management and ways of discovering, generating,
evaluating, sharing and leveraging knowledge to gain a competitive advantage
Knowledge management (KM) represents the human factor in the successful use of
information technology. How do people react to new technology? How do information
technology and related factors affect a company and its structure? You will learn about the
competencies leaders need to survive in times of change.
