Even though there is a lot of mathematics involved with this article the impression that I
get from this article is that it is a complicated process to schedule umpires for baseball games. It
states in the article that the constraints are hard in scheduling umpires. The list of constraints
includes: Crews must not travel from the West Coast to the East Coast without an intermediate
day off, umpire consecutive series more than 1,700 miles apart without an intermediate day off,
travel more than 300 miles preceding a series whose first game is a day game (i.e., before 4 PM).
Crews must take three one-week prescheduled vacations; the fourth week of vacation is taken
individually and not as part of the scheduling process. There are soft constraints and these
constraints may be violated but at a penalty. Crews should not work more than 21 days without
a day off (the “21-day rule”). There are a lot more rules and regulations that are involved with
