1. PUE means Power Usage Effectiveness.
. Measure PUE is to evaluate energy and water and other resources that computing
facilities used and determine how well system is operating.
. The value of PUE that data center managers strive for is 1.00.
2. 5 methods recommended by Google.
a. Measuring PUE to determine energy consumption of data center. This proportion helps
reduce the energy used for non-computing function like cooling.
b. Managing air flow to reduce energy use. First, minimize hot and cold air mixing by
using well-designed containment. Then, eliminate hot spots and use blanking plates for
empty slots in rack. To be more specific, Google applied thermal modeling which uses
computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to locate “hot spots” and identify airflow in the data
center to arrange their equipment like computer room air conditioners (CRACs) to even
out temperatures in the facility.
c. Adjusting thermostat to control the temperature of equipment.
d. Utilizing free cooling to remove heat from facility without using a chiller. Google used
water to trap hot air and cool their equipment, which is seen in data centers in Belgium and
Finland.
e. Optimizing power distribution by minimizing power loss. They use highly efficient
voltage regulator modules to ensure that most of the power goes to the components that do
the actual computing work. And they cut out two of the AC/DC conversion stages by
putting back-up batteries directly on the server racks.
3. ICT sector including data centers which covers large internet data centers accounts for
2% of global green house emission with 0.3% held by the former and 0.1% taken by the
latter.
There are several factors affecting data center power consumption: people, weather,
location, technology…
4. Developing and emerging economies are where data center power consumption will be
able to be greatest. As a consequence of developing economic fastly, these countries need
quite a few of information and data. Plus, the technique that these countries are using may
not be effective one.
5. That company should share new technology with other data center firms because of the
following reasons:
. Decreasing global emissions of green house gases produced by all data center companies.
. Receiving other new technologies shared by other data center firms.
. Creating a fairly competitive environment which motivates company to find other new
technologies continuously.
