Minds, Brains and Programs – Searle:
In order to convince us to explain the fact the computer has phrenic states, Searle in his article,
wants us to imagine a Chinese room that corresponds to computer and seems to understand
Chinese. Then he asks “Where is the construal in the room?” It’s an arti5ce. Like the magician
who makes coins vanish, Searle is asking us to look in the erroneous place. There is no
understanding in the room because its computer imitation is too impotent to let it in. Amend
the precision of its computer imitation and it can handle understanding. And its Chinese can
ameliorate additionally.
In his article “Minds, Brains, and Programs”, Searle argues that, even though computers can
seem to have mental states, they can’t genuinely retain them. And in order to support his claim,
he wants us to think of a Chinese room that:
1. Imitates what computers can do.
2. To engender the appearance of understanding Chinese.
3. Reveals the fact that without relying on and having anything that corresponds to
understanding inside.
There have been many people who argued against Searle and most of them have accepted even
1 or 2 and also looked for “understanding” in the room. That is a mistake because there is no
