Thriller
When someone talks about Michael Jackson, they may first think about his dance. Apart from
dancing, Jackson also has many representative works. Thriller is one of Michael Jackson’s most
popular songs. In 1983, everyone was crazy about this song. However, why has this song become
so popular that it could be called one of the American pop culture? I think there are some
reasons that led Thriller to success.
First of all, I will describe around social and economic. During the 1980s, under Ronald Reagan’s
leadership, the economy of America increased and a number of Americans enjoyed their lives.
They could afford a music album to have fun. Social didn’t be as silent as the Great Depression.
Everything seems to have become normal like before. What’s more, a TV channel came out to
change the life of the music industry. Many musics were popular because of MTV. Under this
channel, Thriller could be shown to the social and many people could see this music video on TV.
Not just Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Madonna, and Def Leppard were famous on MTV.
Secondly, there did not have a music video with a story until Thriller came out. Thriller opened a
new idea for singers to produce their music videos. According to RIAA, after Thriller came out 27
years ago, it still remained the best-selling studio album in the United States. This album sold
more than 50 million copies all over the world. Thriller changed the promotion of the music
industry and the way of selling music albums. The thriller was a great success in sales. It also
changed MTV, broke down the cable network’s racial barriers and raised the bar for video quality.
Most of Michael Jackson’s music videos had a little story except Thriller. There were also Smooth
Criminal, Bad and so on. This album began a new culture of music videos, which direct an MV like
a small movie.
