Metronet Trends: Identifying Trends with Most and Least Impact
For many years, we have seen the economy change bringing various trends into the
workplace. As these changes continue, they will continue to impact business of various aspects
and sizes causing them to adapt, become more versatile in implementing policies and diversity
as well as cause some impact on how operations run and outlook expectations regarding market
value and revenue. The focus of this paper is to de-ne which three (3) impacts of the economic
trends will have the most impact on Metronet, as well as which three (3) will have the least.
With -ber optic/broadband engineering being one of Metronet’s main revenue source,
one trend that will a4ect the company is the shortage of science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM) graduates. A study from the Bureau of Labor Statistics states the last decade has
seen considerable concern regarding a shortage of STEM workers to meet the demands of the
labor market (BLS, 2015). Research shows that graduating high school and college students are
unprepared for work in a knowledge economy and that fewer students are pursuing
undergraduate and graduate degrees in STEM disciplines (SHRM, 2016). Many students believe
they cannot handle the requirements for these degrees. The shortage is also due to a lack of
women in these roles as they hold only one-quarter of technical and scienti-c jobs. Some of the
reasons women do not seek technology and other STEM jobs include the lack of female role
models, gender stereotyping and less family-friendly <exibility in these field (SHRM, 2016).
With those statistics being noted, President Obama has noticed this as an area of concern for
the United States and has stated the following at the 2013 White House Science Fair.
One of the things that I’ve been focused on as President is how we create an all-hands-
on-deck approach to science, technology, engineering, and math… We need to make this
a priority to train an army of new teachers in these subject areas, and to make sure that
