Mental ability tests
These tests typically use questions or problems to measure ability to learn
quickly, logic, reasoning, reading comprehension and other enduring mental
abilities that are fundamental to success in many different jobs. Cognitive ability
tests assess a person’s aptitude or potential to solve job-related problems by
providing information about their mental abilities such as verbal or mathematical
reasoning and perceptual abilities like speed in recognizing letters of the
alphabet.
Mental ability tests are also known as “cognitive” ability tests. They refer to
measures that assess abilities involved in thinking. Including perception, memory,
reasoning, verbal and mathematical abilities, and the expression of ideas.
Why is MAT relevant to business?
Mental/ Cognitive ability tests are one of the most valid selection procedures
across jobs; they also predict learning and training success, and predict
retention.
General mental ability has been found to be the single best predictor of job
performance across all organizations and positions; it accounts for approximately
29% of the variance in job performance. Studies have found that people with
higher general mental ability acquire more job knowledge and acquire it faster.
