Ireland’s Men’s Health
Men in Ireland die on average nearly six years younger than woman do. They have
higher death rates at all ages and for all leading causes of the death. There is growing evidence
that men in an a#empt to maintain their masculinity engage in risky behaviors that can be
seriously hazardous to their health. Most men do no seek medical a#en(on when sick because
they believe it is a sign of weakness. There is very li#le research into men’s health in Ireland
and therefore no strategic policy on men’s health. Men from lower occupa(onal classes have
worse health in all years and for all condition when compared to men in the higher
occupa(onal class.
In Ireland the morality rate for men from 1989-1998 was 1007 per 100,000. This rate
represents a 54% higher level for men. In 2001 the leading causes of death for men in Ireland
