“THE KISSING DISEASE”
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DISEASE:
Infectious mononucleosis, refers to group of symptoms caused by Epstein –Barr
virus (EVB). Mostly affected category is teenagers but you can get it at any age.
Mode of transfer of the infection: It is also called as the Kissing disease since it
has wide spread through saliva.
The virus is also spread through direct contact with other bodily fluids
Incubation Period: It is about 4 to 6 weeks whereas the signs and symptoms can
last for about 1-2 months.
No licensed vaccine for prevention and no specific approved treatment.
Symptoms of the illness:
•Infectious mononucleosis is clinical entity characterized by
•Pharyngitis
•Cervical lymph node enlargement
•Fatigue and fever
How mononucleosis is detected:
The acute illness is marked by high viral loads in
both oral cavity and blood accompanied by the
production of immunoglobulin IM antibodies
against EBV viral capsid antigen.
