Media Socialization Essay
Throughout history the media has had a significant impact on socialization in America
culture. Many of us don’t realize it but a lot of our perceptions on events going in the world are
shaped by how the media portrays it. A lot of this socialization goes on subconsciously so we
tend not to pay that much attention. Looking back I can see many times that my perspective has
been influenced by the media and this can be harmful to independent thinking.
One of the ways the media has influenced socialization is through racial bias. I am
African American and I grew up in an urban community before moving to the suburbs so this
bias did not affect but I did see it affect many others in the suburban community I live in now.
