Difficulty Paper #2, “No name Woman”
In the excerpt, “No name Woman” by Maxine Kingston, Kingston recounts chronicles of a young
woman who became pregnant out of wedlock and is ultimately forced to suicide to escape the
consequences. Initially, the story lacks context between honesty and deception, making the narrator’s
perspective and information questionable. The narrator speculates the personality of her aunt, however,
her true initiative is to illustrate the struggle that Chinese immigrants face when emerging into a new
culture and illustrate the difference between truth and fiction. Kingston’s transition between the two
separate stories, allows the reader to fully comprehend the detrimental effects woman face in Chinese
society.The story’s shared seem to serve two purposes for both Kingston and her aunt, it ultimately allows
