The fabric of the Matrix is woven with multiple religious themes and symbolism. Several
of the themes can find their origins in the Christian faith. Neo is a messianic figure that will save
humanity from the machines and bring peace to the world. The machines are sin and pain that
humanity has brought upon itself. Before Neo can become the chosen one, he must first sacrifice
himself and then be resurrected.
One of the primary religious themes in the Matrix is that of a savior. Early in the movie,
Thomas is in his room sitting at his computer. He hears a loud knock on the door and goes to
answer it. Thomas takes money from a buyer and gives him a disk. After Thomas gives the buyer
the disk, the buyer says “Halleluiah, you’re my savior, Man. My own personal Jesus Christ (The
Matrix, 1999). Thomas joins the buyer and his crew on their night out on the town at a night club.
