Mathematics in the Real World
While it was easy for my friends and I to say “we will never use this nonsense ever
again” back in High School when speaking about algebra, I find it hard to find any sort of career
that involves absolutely no mathematics. I believe a janitor is quite possible the only valid
answer and even a janitor will use simple math to calculate simple situations.
My boyfriend currently works inside of a small warehouse that he manages essentially
by himself, and he is constantly explaining to me how he uses math constantly. From how to
stack the pallets safely and efficiently, to calculating inventory, and even to calculate the angles
in which the forklift can scoop up and place a pallet on the 3rd row rack. The pallets can fit 18
cases per layer, and can stack at a most of 7 layers, so he is always telling me how it is a
constant mathematical enigma to figure out the best way to separate, stack, and complete the
pallets on order of two hundred plus cases. Typically, as he explains, the biggest issue is trying
to manage how the pallets can be stacked to allow for maximum quantities while retaining a
safe structure. In these types of stations, he uses geographical concepts of how to use surface
area but using engineering concepts in terms of structure.
I think another important area of life is driving. The mathematics of angles when making
