The Martian
Introduction
The Martian is a title of an American film that is produced in 2015. It is a science fiction
film which is directed by Scott, Ridley based on the Martian film by Weir Ander. The film is
mainly about Damon Matt, who is portrayed as an astronaut in the film. It tells about his
struggles to make it to survival and how other characters show their concern by making efforts to
rescue him. In efforts to gain more knowledge on the film, this paper seeks to provide
information on characters, music, and sound used in the film as well as a lesson from it. The
paper will also provide information on how the characters, music, and sound are used by the
producer to make the viewers understand what the film is all about. Characters, music, and sound
in a film may be used to depict various themes and messages intended for the viewer, in different
ways. Elements used in films are used for the purpose of making it interesting, explaining
themes and other aspects of a movie in a clearer way, making readers understand the main point
of the movie and be entertained at the same time.
Characters
The main characters in the film that have major roles to play are Mark Watney, Annie
Montrose, Ares 3 Crew, Mindy Park, Mitch Henderson, Teddy Sanders, Rich Purnell and Venkat
Kapoor.
Mark Watney: He is one of the most significant protagonists in the movie. When he is
first introduced in the movie, he is just like any other character and nothing about him seems
special. At the end of the movie, he is portrayed as a great hero. This highlights the strength of
the movie in terms of character and plot development. According to the film, when he is offered
the chance to go to mars, he became stranded in which he made the best out of the situation he is
in. He is determined and used his intellectual mind and personality to find his way out. The most
significant thing about Mark in the film is his aspect of winning (Chien and Robert 6). The film
is set in such a way that the viewer could clearly see the transition between the normal Mark at
the beginning and a hero in the end. This style is used to show the role of the character in the
film and how changes took place from one moment to the other making it interesting. In general
Watney represents the heroes in the film.
Annie Montrose: The film is known to be filled with botany-studying, Doctor Who-
loving, and nerds who are wheeling and dealing. However, there is one character who is seen to
stand out, differentiating herself from the disco and the black framed glasses records. This
character is Annie. She is seen to be quite different, not attaching herself to what the other
characters are up to. She is seen to be a total positive change for instance, when she leads the
press conference, a PR which would have turned to be a disaster becomes a success. She is a
character seen to bring positive change. Despite all the negativity around her, she chooses to
remain positive and make things change for the better when other people feel like they are falling
apart (Burke 48). In the film, Annie is used as one person who shows that people should not lose
hope. When matters seem not to go as expected and rather fall apart, there is always that one
person who keeps going and works hard to see changes and success.
Ares 3 Crew: When Mark is stranded on Mars, people put in efforts to have him rescued.
There is no one who put in much effort as the crew members. They are the ones who art fully
involved to make sure that he is rescued and at the right time. The author points out that these
guys should be thanked as they played a great role in rescuing Mark. One of the crew members is
Martinez who is taken to be like a brother to Mark as a result of their closeness. They are so
close to the extent that Mark tells him, Martinez, that if he dies, he should be the one to check on
his parents and break the news to them. Johanssen is the other member of the crew and is known
to be like a sister to Mark. Vogel is the last member of the team who is a friend of Mark. All
these individuals take Mark to be a close friend to them and ensure that they are there to offer a
helping hand when he needs them the most. This crew in the film is used to show that there are
those people who will always be there to offer help no matter the situation. These are the kind of
friends who are close and should be kept close because they are always there in case anything
happens.
Mindy Park: One of the characters who experiences more growth after Mark in the film
and film. Mindy is forced to experience some difficulties, but she managed to survive. This
further highlights the noteworthy character development in this movie. When he is first
