Marriage as Enslavement
In Kate Chopin’s The Story of an Hour and The Storm, marriage is viewed
differently than people view it today. In The Story of an Hour, she exposes
nineteenth century gender roles. She is of the opinion that women are being
dominated, trapped, and enslaved by their marriages. Women were considered
second hand citizens compared to men, and men voiced their authority and
influence on their wives, not really giving them a chance to have their own
opinion.
