Tribes
From what I deciphered from Seth Gobin’s speech on “Tribes”, a tribe is a group of people
that come together with common beliefs and desire on a subject that has great meaning to
them, and acting in ways to make that subject become a known concept through passion.
Whether you are leading a movement or participating as a follower, if you and group of
people have the same mindset and desires on developing the awareness and importance of
material, and everyone is pushing that importance, you are in a tribe. It is like a religion,
many people have the same views and stand strong for what they believe in, because
everyone is connected and want to accomplish the same goals.
The reasons I believe that people join tribes are to have that connectedness with a group of
people in a way to feel comfortable with people sharing the same concerns, and because
they don’t know how to go forward with their beliefs so they join a group that has already
started. Using the dog catcher story form Seth Robin’s speech, there were lots of people
with the concerns of the well-being of animals, but Nathan Winograd was the one to step
up and start a movement. People joined quickly as they too shared the same interest as
Nathan, and now that they are a part of this “tribe” they feel like their voice is now being
heard, and what matters to them is now important to a large quantity of people.
I, myself, am a part of a tribe. I am a student athlete here at UTPB alongside over 400,000
