Hofstede’s six dimensions of national
culture
Geert Hofstede, a Dutch psychologist, assisted by others, came up with six basic issues that society
needs to come to term with in order to organize itself. Hofstede’s six dimensions of

national culture
include:
1. Power distance;
2. Individualism;
3. Masculinity;
4. Uncertainty avoidance;
5. Long-term orientation; and
6. Indulgence.
Individualism
Individualism is the extent to which people feel independent, as opposed to being interdependent as
members of larger wholes.
