The Institute of Medicine (IOM) brought patient safety into the forefront of heath care in
1991 with the release of their report To ERR is Human: Building a Safer Health System (Ulrich
& Kear, 2014). The release of this report highlighted the lack of safety for patients in healthcare
facilities. After the release of the report, initiatives and guidelines were created to assist in
improving patient safety (Ulrich & Kear, 2014). Although improvements were made to aid in
patient safety, harm still occurs. The World Health Organization estimates that in developed
countries, one in ten patients are harmed while receiving hospital care and 7 out of 100
hospitalized patients will acquire health care associated infections (WHO, 2014). Medical errors
rank as the eight leading cause of death in the United States which an estimated 44,000 deaths
per year (Patient Safety, n.d.).
Patient Population
Bridgeport Hospital is a member of Yale New Haven Hospital system. It is a non-profit,
acute care facility that cares for patients of all ages from pediatric to adult to geriatric. Bridgeport
Hospital comprises of 425 beds and employs 230 medical and surgical residents and over 2,600
employees. It provids a full range of inpatient and outpatient services in cardiology, surgery,
cancer treatment, orthopedics, radiology, emergency medicine, women’s health services, family
services, behavior health along with a collection of specialized services.
Bridgeport Hospital is located in Fairfield Country, Connecticut. There are 147,612
individuals living in Bridgeport, Connecticut and 945,438 in Fairfield County (United States
Census Bureau, n.d.). Bridgeport Hospital is easily accessible by major highways including
Interstate 95 and the Merritt Parkway making it attractive to both Fairfield county and New
Haven county residents.

Market Share
Bridgeport Hospital was voted best in Fairfield County for geriatrics,
pulmonology, nephrology, and urology 2012-2013 (Bridgeport Hospital, n.d.). It offers three
types of minimally invasive bariatric surgery. They also have recently expanded their cardiac,
oncology and vascular surgery services. Bridgeport Hospital utilizes robot-assisted minimally
invasive technology to reduce blood loss, decrease hospital stay and produce less scarring and
less post-operative pain. This technology has been used to perform more than 1500 procedures,
which is more than any other hospital in Fairfield County (Bridgeport Hospital 3, n.d.).
Bridgeport Hospital also has the only burn center in the State of Connecticut.
