The article There Is No Unmarked Woman explains to us how in society there is no such
thing as an unmarked woman. The author goes into detail about how men can go on
unmarked, yet with women no matter what they do they can never pass as unmarked. This
meaning that if the women decided dress up this means that they are available and looking
to mingle, while if they do not try that means they are unable to take care of themselves
which leads to more problematic conflicts such as disqualifying her from many positions.
Even when people fill out forms men are unmarked while women are marked. This being
shown when men check off a box in the form there is only ‘Mr.’ yet when a woman wants
to mark a box to state whether or not she is a ‘Ms. Or a Mrs.” Does mark women.
Although women try to go under the radar and stay unmarked the standards that society
has set for us does not allow for women to do so as men do.
It is very uncommon to meet a woman who decides to keep her maiden name even after
getting married. Yet it is even more uncommon to find children with their mother’s maiden
name as a part of their last name outside of the Latino population. While reading this
article the part that stuck out the most to me was that all married women surnames were
