Marijuana in Oahu
Introducon
I used to believe that using marijuana always bring nothing but bad things. My
perspective was that if you are using marijuana you will become a drug addict and you will live
an unhealthy life. That’s what I used to think aer I decided to do this project and do some
researching. I’ve never smoked marijuana in my life before and it’s very tempting to try because
of how society are favoring it and the feeling of being “high”. People use it for other reasons,
some people use it because it helps them get through school and work, and some are curious
and peer pressured in to doing it. Especially for teenagers, smoking weed is a sense of
accomplishment because music artists like Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, and Kanye West are
endorsing it. But with many marijuana users here in Hawaii and the controversies about
legalizing marijuana, this drug is becoming more interesting than ever, and I wanted to learn
more about the drugs from the perspective of marijuana users and the media. Politicians here
in Hawaii are making moves that could potentially allow us to smoke marijuana legally on the
street because of the pro,ts that other legalized states gained from this drug. Despite the cons
of marijuana, I believe that Hawaii’s economy will grow if this drug becomes legal for
recreational use, and it would help the state tremendously.
Research Method
The three research method I use for this project are conducting interviews who uses
marijuana, participating in social events, and do extensive research on the internets. I had two
subjects for the interview who are good friends of mines. Their names are Mike and Neil. I also
participated in events with Mike along with his other friends who are marijuana users as well. I
made sure that the websites I was going through was a legitimate source and trustworthy. I’ve
visited government websites and local articles wri/en by journalists to present my ,ndings. One
of the challenges I had in this project was developing questions that would be comfortable for
my interviewee to answer. I know that marijuana is illegal here in Hawaii, and there is a chance
that I could really hurt my interviewee by exposing of them too much. There was one person
that I made contact but refuses to do the interview because he was an actual drug dealer and
he didn’t want to take the risk in exposing himself. Here in Hawaii, it is a pe/y misdemeanor if
you get caught with an ounce or more of marijuana and in addition to that, you get ,ned $100.
