A common type of statue to be found in the villa gardens and courtyards of the ancient
Romans from 1-500 AD, the Marble Statue of Pan now resides in The Metropolitan Museum of
Art in New York in the Greek and Roman Art Collection

some form of vessel on his back because of his position, but that has been lost. The statue likely
served as part of a fountain, where the water would spew from the vessel

elements have taken a toll on this piece, as its arms and feet seem to have been broken or
weathered away long ago. The work depicts the playful and unruly nature of the Greek God of

Delicately carved from white marble that has yellowed with time, Pan is shown as a man
with the legs, horns, and tail of a goat. He has curly hair and beard, and long shaggy fur covers
his legs from the mid-thigh down to where his hooves would be if he was intact. The statue is
