STRESS IS THE EXPERIENCE OF OPPORTUNITIES OR THREATS THAT PEOPLE
PERCEIVE AS IMPORTANT AND PERCEIVE THEY MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO
HANDLE OR DEAL WITH EFFECTIVELY.
ANOPPORTUNITY IS SOMETHING THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BENEFIT A
PERSON.
ATHREAT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HARM A PERSON.
A SECOND ASPECT OF STRESS IS THAT THE THREAT OR
OPPORTUNITY EXPERIENCED IS IMPORTANT TO A PERSON. BY IMPORTANT, WE
MEAN THAT IT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO AFFECT A PERSONS WELLBEING OR
THE EXTENT TO WHICH SOMEONE IS HAPPY, HEALTHY, OR PROSPEROUS.
THE THIRD KEY ASPECT OF STRESS IS UNCERTAINTY. THE PERSON EXPERIENCING
AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY OR THREAT IS NOT SURE THEY CAN DEAL WITH IT
EFFECTIVELY.
STRESS CAN ALSO RESULT FROM EMPLOYEES BEING UNCERTAIN OF HAVING A
GOOD FAMILY LIFE WHILE ALSO ADVANCING THEIR CAREERS.
STRESS IS ROOTED IN PERCEPTION.
Employees high on self-esteem, for example, are less likely to experience stress from
challenging work assignments and are also more likely to think they can deal effectively with
sources of stress.
Type A employees have stress experiences different from those of Type B employees.
Employees with an internal locus of control may experience less stress than those with an
external locus of control because they feel that they can influence what happens to them.
