Management vs. Leadership
Management vs. Leadership, this has been a great debate for many years. Many
discussion have risen in regards to the two being one in the same. However, leadership and
management are two distinct entities that must be in harmony for the success of any business or
organization. Management is a profession, leadership is a calling; nevertheless, a single
individual can hold both titles. As the debate continues, it is important to understand the
differences, similarities, skills, and responsibilities of each role.
A leader is described as an individual that originates a vison for the organization. In doing
so, a leader envisions the future and sets goals to obtain the objectives. One of the most
important roles of leadership is gaining trust of his/her followers by practicing ethical standards,
and possessing professional behavior. A leader will always set forth exemplary examples of how
each individual in the organization should conduct themselves. A leader must also be able to
communicate, articulate, and show enthusiasm in order to create buy-in for their followers. It is
also imperative for them to be able to successfully coach an individual by encouraging and
giving the individual freedom to grow and to learn. They must furthermore, motivate to
challenge the norm, and seek innovation. It is also essential that a leader be willing to train and
mentor individuals by showing correct performance and providing them with knowledge and
wisdom to reach the goal(s) of the organization. Leaders will take the vision of the organization
and challenge objectives to ensure overall success. [ CITATION Edu142 \l 1033 ] “A successful
