Well thats a good question to start with. Lets first ask my good buddy Mr. Webster and he
says:
“1 : the act of empowering to act for another. 2 : a group of persons chosen to represent
others. “
Delegating authoritys or tasks to your employees is a good tool for many reasons.
1. It allows the manager to focus on more important issues by giving certain tasks to other
people.
2. It shows your employee or employees that you trust them and they are more willing to
follow the manager.
3. It allowes the manager to test his employee or employees to see what their skills and
capabilities are.
4. Can be used as a tool to train future managers.
Delegation allows managers to do what they are supposed to do, “manage”.
The only down points to delegation is that is does not allow the manager to see every task
to the end. Also, if the manager is not good at it he can give the wrong task to the wrong
person and it can fail. But these down points are only disadvantages to people that do not
understand the principle of delegation, to empower others.
If a manager oversees the entire task he gave to his employee then he never delegated, he
never showed trust and more importantly he did not gain any trust. All he really did was
either give his employee one more reason to quit or one more reason urinate in the
managers coffee when the manger isnt looking (I would not mention it if it was not
