Management
Management is both a process and a distinct group
of roles within the organization. Through the
formal authority structure of the organization, they
represent , make decisions and act on behalf of the
organization as an entity

The term management is not easily defined. One reason
for this is that , while the management functions exists
in all organizations, the organizations themselves can be
so different. In our economy, there are several forms of
organization e.g. Partnership, private company, public
company, multinationals; corporation, local authority,
cooperatives, etc.
All of these organizations, have an identifiable
management structure

The exact nature, the aims and functions of
the management side of the organization will
be somewhat different in all of them. E.g
profit oriented, service oriented, employee
oriented etc

Role of management
A basic feature of all formal organizations is that
they have specific objectives.
The prime reason for the existence of an
organization is to achieve these objectives.
Private organization-
– to make profit
-satisfy customer requirement
– utilize resource efficiently
– plan for future expansion
– secure a greater % of the available market, etc.

The public organization, the objective is to : –
provide adequate service in many aspects. E.g. a
health service to the community, health care
advice, diagnostic service and medical treatment,
etc.

Attached to this role are the concepts of :
authority, responsibility, and accountability.
Authority: -the legitimate power to get things
done. Within an organization, action is required
to achieve objectives and this is accomplished by
people being given the proper authority.
Traditionally, authority is derived from position
within the organization.
Responsibility
It is well founded rule of management that arising
naturally out of authority is responsibility and these
should be co-equal.
If someone is given authority to accomplish certain
tasks, then that person is responsible for ensuring that
