5) What kind of organizational structure would you expect to find in
(a) a fast-food restaurant – I would expect to find a formal organizational structure in a
fast-food restaurant. The tasks crew members perform are repeated multiple times with
little variation making the operations routine. Also, should a problem arise, the issue can
usually be resolved relatively quickly by middle management. (pages 471-472)
(b) a company like GE or GM – I would expect to find a formal/mechanical
organizational structure in a company like GE or Gm. Both companies mass produce
products like light bulbs and automobiles. When utilizing a formal organizational
structure, this gives management the most control over processes such as production.
Also, workers would be completing repetitive tasks on the production line which would
require less task changes. (472-473)
(c) a biotech company – I would expect to find a decentralized/matrix organizational
structure in a biotech company. Biotech produces one of a kind products and usually
requires hazardous tasks which would require quick reactions and response. Being
decentralized would allow the highly skilled workers the authority to respond quickly to
each unique situation. (472-473,481
6) What kind of structure does your college or business use?
I work for an engineering/contracting firm which utilizes a decentralized/organic
organizational structure. Engineers are highly trained professionals which do not like
being told what to do. Upper management usually leave them to their own devices unless
a major problem arises. On the contracting side problems arise daily and the on-site
