Background:
Malaria is a disease of the blood that is caused by the female Anopheles mosquito, it is
the only mosquito that transmits malaria, the disease is then transmitted from person to person.
Once the parasite enters the human body, it lodges itself in the liver where it multiplies

prospering, taking a huge toll on lives, livelihoods, and countries’ progress. If drugs are not
available to the infected, or if the parasites are resistant to them, malaria infection can eventually
lead to anemia, hypoglycemia, cerebral malaria, and in some cases death. Zacapharm is one of
the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. In 2013 it had revenues of $54.3 billion and net
income of $10.1 billion. Its current business strategy is to maximize revenues from existing
products by spending heavily on marketing and investing less in research, and by vigorously
litigating generic versions of its drugs. Last year the company acquired a small firm that has
developed a possible vaccine against malaria.
Issue: Should the government push companies to sell medication online?
