Abstract
Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam’s Impact on African American Culture
The research on the impact of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam has on African
American culture shows the importance of the movement. This relevance is due to the continued
impact, but more importantly the force behind the movement acted to increase allegiance to the
Nation of Islam for protection and gave a voice to African Americans who regularly felt prejudiced
against. Louis Farrakhan’s leadership of the Nation of Islam was effective due to his diverse
background, credibility, and relatability to the African Americans.. The Nation of Islam and
Farrakhan gave a platform to change a nation that is in a continuum.

African Nationalist thought has come through many changes over the course of history.
The distressing fact that much of the history of Africana is lost because of the history of injustice
and prejudice since the founding of this country and even further back in history. African
American culture has promulgated into an amalgamation of many views and theories, but over the
course of the studies for this course, there has a newfound respect for the seeking of piecing
together a history and a culture that has been lost over generations. One of the phases in changing
the course and history of African American culture in America has been the Civil Rights
Movement and the influential leaders that through peaceful and not so peaceful protest brought
African Americans from all over the country together to formulate groups and ideas that propelled
a nation into succumbing to what was right. One of these movements and leaders that focused on
bringing African Americans together was the Nation of Islam and Louis Farrakhan. The impact of
Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam on African American culture is understated in history.
