Imagine your town growing up; quiet, calm, and saying hi to your neighbors next
door like you’re all family. In “The Lottery” by Shirly Jackson writes the story in a small town in
American on a June day which was pleasant, clear, and warm. The children begin the story
gathering stones and the whole town gathering with them, only to be apart of something not
many believe in. The Lottery of the town is an old tradition which some believe is needed, such
as Old Man Warner and Mrs. Delacroix, but others are reluctant to participate in it such as,
Tessie Hutchinson and Mr. Adams.
Throughout the story you slowly learn about what the Lottery is and how it
works. A character Mrs. Jackson uses is Old Man Warner, he believes that the Lottery is needed
to keep the corn and crops growing so the town can prosper. He also talks about how the younger
generation has lost the way and how their thoughts of change are ridiculous, “Pack of crazy
