Ad Hominem – (“Against the person”) When someone deflects away from the topic or argument
being made by attacking the person making it, or tried to discredit what is being said by casting
doubt on the person saying it.
• A man is talking about the wage gap between men and women, and someone dismisses
what he’s saying because he doesn’t have to suffer from the inequality
• A witness on the stand in court is testifying to what she saw during the robbery and the
defense attorney brings up that she was once arrested for traffic violations
Circular Reasoning – Making a claim and trying to prove it using the claim itself. (Also called
begging the question.)
• Mexican food is the best because it is sooooo good.
• The holy book is true because it says it’s true, and it’s true so that’s a true fact.
