Due Date: November 5, 2018
Read the attached short text from Jamaica Kincaid titled “Girl”. Consider the ways it invites a
diasporic interpretation. Think about the other texts we’ve read and discussed. How does “Girl”
reflect a complex experience of race, gender and place, nationality, etc.?
Compose a thesis that poses an analysis of this piece of writing. Consider your writing in light of
what you now know about the definition of diaspora, including both the Indian Ocean diaspora and
the Transatlantic diaspora, and gender and identity construction. Compose a thoughtful thesis and
utilize at least two to three ADW texts and three to five ADW concepts to inform your work. In
addition, you should use specific examples from the primary text (“Girl”) and from the secondary
texts you choose.
Use these concepts, as well as the terms we have discussed, to develop your essay (there
are others, of course, as well):
Social construction of race, gender, and sexuality Types & experiences of enslavement
Fact making as a social enterprise Types of resistance in the New World
Systems of oppression as interlocking Labor during slavery vs. post slavery
