Last year, I met a boy. And every time a girl starts a sentence off with “I met a boy,” we all know it could
go in any type of direction. Young love is messy; it’s liberating, yet binding, it’s complete confusion, yet
confidence that you’re exactly where you want to be-even if it hurts you sometimes. Love is pain you
want to feel over and over again. It is a parallel world where one half of you is stuck in your childlike
mentality, and some days you can’t believe you’ve fallen in love with someone and that they love you
back, but then the other half of you wants nothing more than to be an adult and just run away with this
particular person. That’s what the ‘ideal’ grown person romantic relationship is like, right? Love,
marriage, a home, a family, intimacy. We crave it all.
But my problem is that I’d craved all of those things entirely too soon.
Getting into my first relationship was like every other regular experience I’d had in my life so far-such as
going to a new school (something that, by last year, I was extremely familiar with), my first concert, or
applying to colleges. I was nervous and unsure of what would happen, but at the same time, I was so
excited for what was to come! Someone had picked me of all people, and I couldn’t believe it. I can count
on one hand all the times in my life where I’d ever felt special or chosen-and becoming this boy’s
girlfriend was one of those moments. Even now, I can’t really decide if that’s a good or a bad thing.
