“How to Negotiate Salary During the Interview Process”
Salary negotiation for acceptable employment compensation is a key element to workplace satisfaction. Being
unhappy with one’s pay is directly related to workplace performance. Being unhappy with one’s compensation
directly affects one’s satisfaction in their job and their ability to do their best work. This unhappiness may lead
to poor or mediocre work performance, which could then land someone out of work, thus causing a vicious
cycle.
How to Negotiate Salary – The “Old School Method”
The “Old School Method” of salary negotiation is the perspective that such a topic is only to be discussed if the
hiring or human resources manager “brings it up first”, as by this point the person(s) in charge of hiring have
already decided or received approval to hire you. This method leaves it up to chance that the salary is
comparable or possibly exceeds your expectations. Furthermore, this method may be good for someone just
starting out in their field or someone who lacks confidence in their skills and will settle for what the employer
thinks he or she is worth. The Old School Method often means that employment candidates have went
through a myriad of interviews, investing time, money, and energy towards obtaining a position that will not pay
that person what they are worth.
The “New School Method”
The “New School Method” proposes not taking the job no matter what. This approach involves employing the
“executive mindset”, “switching from thinking like a job–seeker and more like a professional in their chosen field
